The Top 10 Reasons Why You Suck At Playing Guitar
You don't 'need' to play guitar enough. If you desire to become a great guitarist, you have to want it badly enough to sacrifice other parts of your life to devote to practice. This doesn't mean you have to give up your social life and never take the guitar out of your hands until your Jimi Hendrix? But it does mean you need to set aside time to practice and commit to actually it. If you really want to learn guitar then you shouldn't feel the need to put it off till later to make time for some television! You have limiting beliefs about your ability. Believe it or not, many people have hidden limiting beliefs which stop them from progressing into the guitarists they want to be. Do your friends/spouse/parents knock you and think you're wasting your time? Don't let anyone put you off from doing something that's important to you. Even the greatest players had to start somewhere! There is no such thing as 'natural ability'. Nobody was born playing guitar, they had to learn too. So don't be hard on yourself if you can't play as well as you'd like just yet - and don't let anyone stop you from trying. Don't listen to anyone's negativity! You don't know how to practice. Practice just isn't as simple as you have been led to believe. Many people just get their guitar and run through some exercises, a song, or a guitar tab the same way they have done it hundreds of times before, and they just aren't getting any benefit or improvement from doing that. So you need to know how to practice effectively. You don't put enough time aside for practice. If you want to get really good on guitar, then you need to be setting a side a set period of time each day or each week for practice. It's okay to vary it from week to week if you like, but you have to commit to actually practicing regularly otherwise it's going to take you much more time to improve. You don't set goals. It's important to have some kind of goal in your practice. How can you get anywhere without first knowing where you're going? By setting yourself targets to aim for in your practice, you will get their much faster. You Don't focus on one thing at a Time. You need to have some focus when you practice. You need to be aware of what you're trying to do, and not trying to learn too many things at once. Many people try to learn too many songs, too many tabs, or too many guitar method books all at the same time and suffer from information overload. How many songs can you play a part of, but not the whole thing? You need to focus on one thing at a time! You Don't Play Slowly Enough At First It's important not to just play something as fast as possible, or as fast as you have heard some other guy play it on the radio. You need to take things slow - and play slowly enough so you don't keep making mistakes. You Try To Learn Things You Aren't Ready For It's important that you know you're capabilities. This isn't to say you shouldn't strive to improve, but you must remember to start at the beginning. You can't take any short-cuts without having to pay for it in the long-run. You're Taking Lessons From Someone Who Can't Teach You may have a friend who can play guitar, or some guy down the road used to give lessons 25 years ago - but just because someone can play guitar, doesn't actually mean they have the skills to teach guitar. The two things are actually very different. And if you're not learning from someone who knows how to teach, you could be causing yourself more problems than your solving by having lessons from this person. You Don't Have A Good Guitar You don't need to break the bank by getting that $1000 guitar just yet, but you at least need a fairly decent guitar that will inspire you to pick it up and play it! Many of the cheap starter packs for beginners just aren't up to scratch, and cause many budding guitar players to give up in frustration without giving it a fair chance. Five Great Practice Ideas I Learned From My Piano Students! Sometimes the teacher learns more from the student than the student does from the teacher. Hopefully, not too often, but today I would like to share with you some great practicing ideas that have come from my piano students over the years:1. Effective Band Rehearsal If your band is in rehearsals, either preparing for gigging, or practising new songs to add to your repertoire, the chances are you will have to hire a rehearsal room. The costs of hiring a room can soon mount up if you don't organise your time effectively. The Irish Harp The harp that once through Tara's halls the soul of music shed, now hangs as mute on Tara's walls, as if that soul were fled. So sleeps the pride of former days, so glory's thrill is o'er, and hearts that once beat high for praise, now feel that pulse no moreTo tell the history of the Irish harp is to tell the history of the Irish people. Piano Playing and Performance Anxiety I'll never forget the first time I played the piano for an audience. It was my first concert and it was fairly full up. Piano Lessons Can be Fun! There are essentially two ways to learn piano - note reading or chords. For those who want to spend years learning how to play other peoples music, note reading is the way to go. Six Reasons to Play New Age Piano Here are six very good reasons to learn how to play piano in the New Age style:1. It's easy. The Flower Garden and New Age Piano Music If you've ever looked at a flower garden, not only its beauty may have captivated you, but also its overall arrangement. There may have been some tulips or roses combined with other flowers or plants. How to Get Past Creative Blocks When I first began playing the piano and improvising, there were times when the music just wouldn't flow. No matter what I did, I couldn't make it go any further. Do You Know What a Didgeridoo Is? Do you know what a didgeridoo is? There are so many things in this life that are unknown to us. I bet you could find out about something outside your normal sphere of vision and experience everyday for the rest of your life and still not get close to knowing about everything out there. Dont Go Tubthumping I have always had a big problem with my addiction to music. I tend to hear I song I like, then rush out to the local record store to buy the CD, without consideration for whether or not I would actually like the rest of the songs on the set. Oh My Aching Head! Can Music Really Make You Feel Better? We all know, if only instinctively, that music has a profound effect on us. If we didn't believe that music affects us then singing lullabies to calm children and help them sleep wouldn't be universal. Songwriting - The Art of Writing a Good Song Did you know that good songwriting is often the key to establishing a successful music career? But more than that, it can be fun! When you write a song you are able to express yourself in new and creative ways. Whether you're sad, happy, angry, or in love. Top 7 Donts for Successful Improvisation 1. Don't try and make something happen. Warner Music Executive Payments "In human life, art may arise from almost any activity, and once it does so, it is launched on a long road of exploration, invention, freedom to the limits of extravagance, interference to the point of frustration, finally discipline, controlling constant change and growth." Susanne Langer (1895-1985)CommentaryIn these times of major record label mergers, downsizing, the slashing of label rosters, and thousands of record company jobs being lost over the last three years--not to mention the enormous sea change and seismic shifts that technology has wrought--comes one of the most disturbing reports we have come across. An Interview with Angus Young of ACDC - Why He Plays a Gibson SG Steven: Maybe more than any other guitarist ever, you're inextricably linked to the Gibson SG? What was the evolution that brought you to this particular instrument?Angus: I started playing on banjos and re-strung them up with six strings. [But] an acoustic guitar, an old bang up little ten-dollar job, that was probably the first thing I started playing on. The Time Machine Exist! We call it music, ever noticed how vividly music triggers memory? The music start and instantly we remember who we were with, where we were, what we were doing. And a whole range of emotions to back them up. How To Play Piano Using Chord Symbols Chord symbols (for example, Fm7, Cmaj7 or G6) are a type of notation used frequently in jazz and other areas of modern music to notate chord progressions and changes. This type of notation differs from that of classical music in that chord symbols don't show the function of a chord the way the Roman numeral notation does. The Bagpipe and Its History You may have heard that bagpipes are a Scottish invention; you may have heard that they are an Irish invention. The truth (of course) is neither one. The Need To Perform I can't believe how much of the year has gone by, but all the same, it's unbelievable how much I've grown through the year and most of it, from demolishing my need to perform.I grew up playing a lot of hockey, being captain of both my schools when I was in Nigeria and London. The Gong - An Instrument Everyone Can Play What exactly is a Gong? The gong is a musical instrument in the percussion family. A gong can have either a definite or an indefinite musical pitch. |
